The Međimurje County Museum is housed in the inner palace of the medieval Zrinski Castle in Čakovec, Croatia's northernmost county seat. Established in 1954 and opened to the public in 1955, it serves as a comprehensive regional museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the cultural, historical, archaeological, and artistic heritage of Međimurje County. The museum's extensive collections, displayed across approximately 5,000 square meters, include artifacts spanning from prehistoric times through the 20th century. It comprises five main departments: archaeology, ethnography, cultural history, history, and a visual arts gallery featuring the memorial collection of the notable Croatian painter Ladislav Kralj–Međimurec. The museum also features a lapidarium in the castle's inner courtyard exhibiting numerous stone monuments outdoors. It provides educational programs, expert services, and organizes specialized exhibitions, playing a vital role in promoting the county's cultural legacy. Although some permanent exhibitions are temporarily closed for renovation, visitors can explore the Zrinski Castle itself, the art gallery, and the Treasury of Međimurje.

History

1954

Founded in 1954 as the Čakovec Town Museum, the institution initially occupied the outer fortifications of Zrinski Castle before relocating to the castle's inner palace.

Over the decades, it expanded its collections and exhibition spaces, evolving into a regional museum with a broad scope covering the entire Međimurje County.

The castle itself is a significant cultural monument, being the largest medieval fortification in the county, which adds historical depth to the museum's setting.

Continuous development and modernization efforts, including digitalization of collections, have been part of the museum's recent history.
