Rõuge Watchtower (Pesapuu Tower)
Võrumaa
Rõuge Watchtower, also known as Pesapuu Tower, is a distinctive 30-meter tall metal observation tower located near Ööbikuoru in Tindi village, Rõuge Parish, Võrumaa, Estonia. Completed on October 10, 2016, the tower's design resembles a tree with two bird nests crowned by a 'golden egg' at the top. This 'golden egg' is illuminated at dusk in blue or pink light to honor newborns in the parish, with blue representing boys and pink representing girls, creating a unique local tradition. The tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of Ööbikuoru valley and the surrounding Võrumaa landscapes. Architect Karmo Tõra conceived the design, and the construction was carried out by Via Betoon Eesti OÜ and Roadservice OÜ. The project received funding from the Environmental Investment Centre with support from the European Union Cohesion Fund and local government. The watchtower is visually captivating both day and night, when special colored lights illuminate the viewing platforms and the 'golden egg'. Prior to this tower, a 24-meter wooden tower with a horizontal rotating wind generator stood on the site from 2006 until its dismantling in 2015 due to disrepair. The old tower was notable for its 3 kW wind generator that supplied renewable energy to the nearby center and footpath lighting, promoting sustainable energy use. Rõuge Watchtower has been recognized with several regional tourism awards, highlighting its cultural and touristic significance.
