Mandarin's House
Macao
Mandarin's House is a significant historic residential complex located in São Lourenço, Macau. Built in 1869 by Zheng Wenrui, the father of the Qing reformist Zheng Guanying, the house served as the family residence where Zheng Guanying completed his influential work, "Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity." Covering an area of 4,000 square meters, it is among the largest family houses in Macau. The architecture primarily reflects Cantonese style but uniquely incorporates Western elements, showcasing a cultural fusion. Over time, the complex was expanded by Zheng Guanying and his brothers. In the late 20th century, the house deteriorated as it was rented out to over 300 tenants, leading to poor living conditions and fire damage. The Macau government took over the property in 2001 and restored it over eight years. Since 2005, Mandarin's House has been part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving its cultural and historical significance.
