Fort Bulnes

Magallanes

70/10090 min

Fort Bulnes, located on Punta Santa Ana by the Strait of Magellan, was originally founded in 1843 under President Manuel Bulnes Prieto to assert Chilean sovereignty over this strategic passage. Constructed primarily from logs and turf bricks, it served as a military outpost to protect the strait and support colonization policies. Despite its strategic importance, harsh weather conditions prevented a permanent settlement. After six years, the population relocated to what became Punta Arenas, and the fort was abandoned and deliberately burned. In the early 1940s, it was reconstructed as a historic monument, including replicas of the church, chaplain's quarters, jail, powder magazine, post office, and stables. Declared a national monument in 1968, Fort Bulnes now forms part of the Parque del Estrecho de Magallanes, which offers visitors access to heritage trails, panoramic viewpoints, and an interpretive museum detailing the region's history. The site uniquely combines Chile’s colonial history with the natural beauty of the Magellanic landscape, making it a compelling destination for cultural and nature tourism.

Tip: The best time to visit Fort Bulnes is during the southern hemisphere's spring and summer months when weather conditions are milder. Visitors are advised to purchase tickets in advance through the official Parque del Estrecho website to ensure entry and access to guided tours. The park offers visitor facilities including trails, viewpoints, and an interpretive center. Discounts may be available for students, seniors, and groups, so checking ahead is recommended. Since the area is remote with variable weather, visitors should dress in layers and prepare for wind and rain. Guided tours enhance the experience by providing historical and natural context.

Historie

1843

Fort Bulnes was established in 1843 to assert Chilean control over the Strait of Magellan amid competing territorial claims.

The schooner Ancud, captained by John Williams Wilson, arrived to found the fort on Punta Santa Ana.

1848

Due to harsh climate and difficult living conditions, the settlement was relocated in 1848 to the more hospitable area of Punta Arenas.

The fort was subsequently abandoned and destroyed by fire during a military mutiny.

1941

Between 1941 and 1943, the fort was reconstructed as a historical monument, and it was officially declared a national monument in 1968.

Since then, it has undergone restorations and is now managed as part of a larger historical and natural park.
