Wildenstein Castle
Basel-Landschaft
Wildenstein Castle, located in the municipality of Bubendorf in Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, is a well-preserved medieval hill castle and a Swiss heritage site of national significance. The castle dates back to at least the late 13th century when Heinrich von Eptingen adopted the name "von Wildenstein". It has witnessed significant historical events, including a siege in 1334 by Bernese and Solothurn forces due to a breach of the peace by its owner. Although the extent of damage from this siege and the 1356 Basel earthquake is unknown, the castle endured multiple ownership changes over the centuries. Today, Wildenstein Castle is owned by the canton of Basel-Landschaft since 1995 and is actively used for cultural events, making it a lively venue that blends historical ambiance with contemporary activities. The castle's hilltop position in a side valley of the Hintere Frenke offers a scenic setting accessible by a footpath from Bubendorf railway station, taking roughly an hour to reach. Its architecture and historical significance make it a unique example of medieval fortifications in the Basel region.
