Rio de Janeiro
The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (MAC) is an iconic cultural landmark located in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1996, the museum is famed for its futuristic saucer-shaped design resembling a flying saucer or chalice, perched dramatically on a cliffside overlooking Guanabara Bay. The structure stands 16 meters tall with a 50-meter diameter cupola, featuring three floors including exhibition halls and panoramic viewing galleries. MAC houses the João Sattamini Collection, Brazil's second largest contemporary art collection, with over 1,200 works spanning from the 1950s to the present, showcasing major Brazilian contemporary artists and movements such as Neo-Concretism and Experimentalism. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Rio de Janeiro landmarks like Sugarloaf Mountain from the museum’s glazed viewing gallery. Surrounding the museum is an 817 square meter reflecting pool that enhances its sculptural presence, while a sinuous external ramp leads visitors into the airy interior spaces. Beyond exhibitions, MAC offers educational programs aimed at engaging the public with contemporary art in a welcoming space. The museum is part of the "Caminho Niemeyer," a series of Niemeyer's architectural works in Niterói, contributing to the city's cultural identity and urban landscape.
