History
Tsar Simeon's Garden was established between October 1891 and July 1892 on the grounds of the former Turkish cemetery "Shehidlik" for the First Bulgarian Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition of 1892.
The garden was designed by Lucien Chevalas, a Swiss gardener, and quickly gained acclaim as a remarkable European-style park in the Balkans.
After the exhibition, the Bulgarian prince Ferdinand I gifted the garden to the citizens of Plovdiv with the condition it be named after Tsar Simeon I.
Throughout the 20th century, the garden saw additions of monuments and fountains, including a bust of Russian Emperor Alexander II in 1909 and the installation of musical fountains in 1975.
The park was renamed "Freedom Park" after 1944 and declared a monument of park art in 1992.
A major restoration in 2015 revived many of its original features from 1936, including the Demeter Fountain and the central pavilion.
