Piber Stud Farm
Steiermark
Situated in the gentle hills of western Styria, Austria, Piber Stud Farm is the historic home and breeding center of the renowned Lipizzaner horses, famed for their association with the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Established near the Baroque Schloss Piber, which was once a monastery, the stud farm was founded in 1798 to breed military horses. The Lipizzaner breeding was relocated here in 1920 from Lipica (now in Slovenia) and has since become the only place worldwide where all 17 classical Lipizzaner mare families are maintained. The stud farm features extensive stables, pastures, and alpine meadows, supporting traditional breeding practices recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Visitors can explore historic stables, observe horse training sessions, and enjoy cultural events in the castle courtyard, which is known for its excellent acoustics. The site also includes a carriage museum showcasing artifacts from the Lipizzaner founding era. The farm offers diverse experiences such as guided tours, carriage rides, alpine excursions, and family-friendly programs, making it a unique blend of cultural tradition and modern leisure in the picturesque Styrian landscape near Graz.
