The Diocese of Kwito-Bié was originally established as the Diocese of Silva Porto on 4 September 1940, carved out from the Diocese of São Paulo de Loanda.
Initially, it was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Luanda.
Over the decades, the diocese underwent territorial changes, losing parts to establish the Dioceses of Malanje in 1957 and Luso in 1963.
In 1977, the diocese became suffragan to the Archdiocese of Huambo, and in 1979 it was renamed to Diocese of Kwito-Bié.
Throughout these changes, the cathedral remained the central church of the diocese, reflecting its evolving ecclesiastical jurisdiction and enduring religious importance in Bié Province.
