歴史
The limestone forming Cave of the Mounds began developing around 488 million years ago during the Ordovician Period under ancient shallow seas.
The cave itself started forming approximately one to one and a half million years ago through the slow dissolution of galena dolomite limestone by acidic rainwater entering through a surface crack known as the "lifeline." In 1828, the surrounding area was settled by Ebenezer Brigham, a lead miner who established a trading post nearby.
The cave was discovered accidentally in 1939 during quarry blasting, leading to immediate cessation of quarry operations.
It was reopened for public tours in 1940 after installing lighting and walkways, and in 1987, it was designated a National Natural Landmark recognizing its exceptional geological significance.
