歴史
Theodore Roosevelt first arrived in the North Dakota badlands in 1883 to hunt bison, quickly falling in love with the rugged lifestyle.
After the deaths of his wife and mother in 1884, he returned to the area seeking solitude and started his Elkhorn Ranch.
His experiences here influenced his later conservation policies as U.S.
President.
The area was initially developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and designated as Roosevelt Recreation Demonstration Area in 1935.
It became Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park in 1947 and was renamed Theodore Roosevelt National Park in 1978, with boundary expansions and wilderness designations following.
