歴史
The Museum of Science and Industry is housed in the Palace of Fine Arts, originally built for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition as a fine arts museum.
Unlike other temporary fair buildings, it was constructed with a permanent brick substructure and later evolved to host the Columbian Museum, precursor to the Field Museum.
After the Field Museum relocated in 1920, the building stood vacant until philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and the Commercial Club of Chicago initiated its transformation into a science museum in the late 1920s.
The museum officially opened in 1933 during the Century of Progress Exposition.
Its interior was redesigned in Art Moderne style by Alfred P.
Shaw while preserving the Beaux-Arts limestone exterior.
In 2024, the museum was renamed to honor Kenneth C.
Griffin, a major benefactor.
