Oponice Castle Ruins

Oponice Castle Ruins are the remains of a medieval fortress located near the village of Oponice in the Nitra Region of Slovakia. Originally built possibly during the Great Moravian Empire and developed into a high medieval castle in the 13th century, it was once owned by Matthew III Csák and later became a royal demesne. In 1392, King Sigismund of Luxemburg granted the castle to the Apponyi family, who significantly expanded and modified it during the 15th to 17th centuries. The fortress was destroyed by fire in 1645 and fell into ruin thereafter. It was last used as a stronghold during Rákóczi's War of Independence and was permanently abandoned after the Habsburg victory in 1708. Archaeological excavations have taken place intermittently since 1981, revealing important insights into its structure and history.
