Vintgar Gorge, located in northwestern Slovenia near Bled, is a spectacular 1.6-kilometer-long natural gorge carved by the Radovna River. The gorge features steep canyon walls rising between 50 to 100 meters, enclosing a wild river that has sculpted pools, rapids, and culminates in the 13-meter-high Šum Falls, Slovenia's largest river waterfall. Established as a tourist destination in 1893, the gorge is renowned for its wooden walkways, known as Žumer Galleries, which allow visitors to explore the dramatic landscape safely. The gorge lies on the edge of Triglav National Park and hosts over 600 plant species, making it a biodiversity hotspot. Nearby, the impressive stone arch railway bridge of the Bohinj Railway, built in the early 20th century, spans the gorge and stands as Slovenia's largest preserved stone arch railway bridge. Vintgar Gorge is celebrated as one of the most beautiful glacial gorges in the Julian Alps, offering a pristine natural experience with well-maintained paths and guided tours available. It provides an immersive adventure into Slovenia's alpine nature and geological history, combining natural beauty with cultural heritage.
