Marid Castle
Al Jawf
Marid Castle is a historic military fortress situated in the city of Dumat al-Jandal in the Al-Jawf region of Saudi Arabia. Constructed originally in the first century AD, the castle is renowned for its strategic location atop a hill approximately 620 meters above sea level, which offers panoramic views over the city and surrounding areas. Its rectangular shape evolved into an oval form over time and features two main entrances and four conical towers standing about 12 meters high. The castle comprises two floors; the lower built from stone and the upper from mud, with internal rooms for guards and observation as well as two wells. Excavations have revealed Nabataean and Roman ceramics dating to the first and second centuries AD, confirming its ancient origins and significance during the Nabataean period. Historically, Marid Castle resisted the siege of Queen Zenobia in the third century and later became part of the Islamic empire in 633 CE. The fortress endured damage and sieges in the 19th and early 20th centuries but underwent restoration efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, including recent projects by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage. The castle is surrounded by a large stone wall with observation openings and remains a prominent cultural landmark near other historic sites such as the Omar ibn al-Khattab Mosque and the old city walls of Dumat al-Jandal.
