History
The Museum of Ponisavlje was founded in October 1947 by the decision of the City People's Committee of Pirot, initially named the People's Museum.
It began with a modest collection mainly composed of gifts from local citizens.
In 1969, the museum was renamed to its current title by the Pirot Municipal Assembly.
Over the decades, it developed into a complex regional museum institution, expanding its collections and establishing departments for archaeology, ethnology, numismatics, history, and art history.
