Founded in 1998 by Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani, the museum was built over a historic fort in Al Samriya, near Al-Shahaniya, Qatar.

From 2017 to 2021, the museum was directed by Kees Wieringa, followed by Claudio Cravero.
