Pei, the Museum of Islamic Art was constructed on an artificial island near Doha's traditional harbor to preserve its prominence and avoid encroachment.
Pei spent six months studying Islamic architecture and history before creating the design inspired by the Ibn Tulun Mosque's light fountain in Cairo.
The building was completed in 2006 and officially opened in November 2008 by the Emir of Qatar.
Since then, the museum has grown into a cultural landmark, hosting exhibitions, educational programs, and becoming the first carbon-neutral museum in the Middle East by 2022.
