Mercado da Ribeira was inaugurated on January 1, 1882, as a traditional food market in Lisbon.
It underwent several expansions and renovations, notably recovering from a fire in 1893 that destroyed part of the market.
In 2000, wholesale activities ceased but retail continued, and in 2001 the market expanded to include cultural and social spaces such as restaurants and craft shops.
In 2010, the Lisbon City Council awarded the concession of the market to Time Out Portugal, which transformed it into the Time Out Market Lisbon food hall, opening in 2014.
Since then, it has become a pioneering concept replicated internationally, blending traditional market commerce with contemporary gastronomy and culture.
