歴史
The original wooden lighthouse at Ventes Ragas was constructed in 1837 to aid ships navigating the dangerous Curonian Lagoon area before the King William Canal was built.
In 1860, a more permanent masonry lighthouse was constructed, and the surrounding cape was reinforced with stones for protection.
A water measurement station was added in 1880.
The lighthouse keeper Mikas Posingis, serving from 1924 to 1944, recognized the site's potential for bird ringing, leading to the establishment of Lithuania's first ornithological station in 1929, founded with the support of Professor Tadas Ivanauskas.
Over the 20th century, the lighthouse transitioned from a crucial navigational aid to a symbolic landmark and scientific center.
