Reformed College of Debrecen
Hajdú-Bihar
The Reformed College of Debrecen, founded in 1538, stands as a cornerstone of Protestant theological education in Hungary. Originally established as a Reformed institution during the Reformation, it has educated generations of Calvinist ministers and scholars. The college's main building, located on Calvin Square behind the Great Church in Debrecen, occupies the site of the original 16th-century structure. Over the centuries, the college expanded its academic scope beyond theology to include philosophy, humanities, natural sciences, and law, laying the foundation for the later University of Debrecen. Despite political upheavals, including the communist era, the college remained a vital religious and educational institution. It also served as a significant political venue during the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution and the 1944 Interim National Assembly. Today, it continues as the Debrecen Reformed Theological University, integrating multiple institutes and departments offering Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate programs. Its rich heritage, architectural presence, and ongoing educational role make it a unique symbol of religious, cultural, and academic life in Hungary.
