The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Fuensanta
Murcia
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fuensanta is a Baroque-style Roman Catholic church located in the pedanĂa of Algezares, part of Murcia, Spain. It houses the venerated image of Our Lady of Fuensanta, the patron saint of Murcia and its fertile plain. The sanctuary's origin traces back to a medieval hermitage built in a cave near a holy spring formed after a Marian apparition on El Hondoyuelo mountain. Construction of the current church began in 1694 to replace the deteriorating hermitage, with its main facade completed in 1705, designed by Toribio MartĂnez de la Vega and adorned with sculptures by Jaime Bort and JosĂ© Balaguer. The interior features a central nave with side chapels, a dome with murals by Pedro Flores GarcĂa depicting pilgrimages and the crowning of the Virgin, and a main altarpiece by Antonio CarriĂłn Valverde and Nicolás Prados LĂłpez replacing the original destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The image of Our Lady of Fuensanta, of unknown authorship and restored in 1802, is enshrined in a small shrine (camarĂn). The sanctuary is set in the Cordillera Sur mountains, offering panoramic views over Murcia and the Segura Valley, adjacent to the protected Carrascoy and El Valle Regional Park. It remains a significant pilgrimage site, especially during religious processions to Murcia Cathedral in Lent and September.
