Silesian Ostrava Castle (Slezskoostravský hrad) is a Gothic castle in Slezská Ostrava in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1290 by Duke Mieszko I of Cieszyn on a border area between the Duchy of Cieszyn and Moravia. The site was strategically placed near the confluence of the Lučina and Ostravice rivers. In 1534, the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance residence, reflecting changing defensive and residential needs. The castle later suffered a major setback when it burned down in 1872. After years of decline, it underwent repairs in 2004 following long-term dilapidation linked to coal mining beneath the structure. In the 21st century it has also served as a cultural venue, hosting events such as the Colours of Ostrava festival until 2012. Today, its layered Gothic-and-Renaissance story makes it one of Ostrava’s most recognizable historic sights.

History

It burned down in 1872 and was later rebuilt.
After a prolonged period of deterioration associated with coal mining under the castle, it was repaired in 2004.
