Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Puntarenas
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, established in 1972 in Costa Rica, is one of the world's most biologically diverse tropical cloud forests. Spanning over 10,500 hectares, it hosts six distinct life zones and is home to more than 2,500 plant species, including the highest concentration of orchids found in a single location. The reserve shelters about 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, including the iconic Resplendent Quetzal, 120 reptile and amphibian species, and thousands of insects. Originally founded through conservation efforts by local Quakers and biologists, the reserve protects largely virgin forest, serving as a crucial refuge for many endemic and endangered species. Visitors can explore the forest via self-guided trails or join expert-led natural history and night walks to experience the forest's unique ecosystem and nocturnal wildlife. The reserve also supports scientific research and environmental education, contributing significantly to tropical conservation. Monteverde is internationally recognized for its sustainable tourism and conservation success, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and researchers alike.
ヒント: Visitors are advised to book their visits online in advance and arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled shuttle departure to ensure entry. The best time to visit is during the dry season for easier trail access, but the forest’s cloud cover and biodiversity can be enjoyed year-round. Guided tours, including night walks, provide deeper insight into the forest’s ecology and nocturnal creatures. Discounts may be available for students and groups, and visitors should prepare for variable weather and bring suitable footwear for forest trails.

歴史
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was founded in 1972 after Quaker settlers and biologists recognized the ecological importance of preserving the cloud forest.
In the 1950s, Quaker families from Alabama settled in the area, naming it Monteverde for its year-round greenery.
Biologists began studying the region in the 1960s, recommending forest preservation to protect water sources and shelter crops.
In the early 1970s, George Powell and associates secured land donations to establish a biological preserve.
The reserve grew steadily, attracting increasing numbers of scientists and tourists.
Despite the extinction of the golden toad in the late 1980s due to fungal disease, the reserve has expanded its conservation and educational efforts, becoming a world-renowned protected area visited by over 70,000 people annually.
