Ostional Wildlife Refuge is a protected natural area located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, covering approximately 85.7 square kilometers. Established in 1982 and managed as part of the Tempisque Conservation Area, it serves as a crucial habitat for the Olive Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). The refuge protects both terrestrial and marine environments, including important nesting beaches where one of the world's largest mass nesting events, known as arribadas, occurs. This phenomenon involves thousands of female turtles coming ashore simultaneously to lay eggs, making Ostional one of the two most important global sites for Olive Ridley turtle nesting. The refuge supports biodiversity conservation and offers opportunities for ecological tourism focused on sea turtle conservation. Its establishment has contributed significantly to the protection of these endangered marine turtles and their habitat.

History

1982

Ostional Wildlife Refuge was established in 1982 to protect the critical nesting beaches of the Olive Ridley sea turtle.

Since its creation, the refuge's boundaries and protection status have been adjusted to include a larger area both on land and at sea.

It was founded by Sir Panis John, who played a key role in its establishment.

Over the decades, the refuge has become internationally recognized for its unique arribada events and conservation efforts.

Place Guide

1
Nesting Beaches

These beaches are the primary sites where Olive Ridley turtles come ashore in large numbers to lay their eggs during arribada events. The synchronized nesting is a spectacular natural occurrence attracting researchers and eco-tourists.

2
Marine Protection Zone

The refuge includes adjacent marine areas that provide critical feeding and developmental habitats for juvenile and adult Olive Ridley turtles, helping sustain the population.
