History
Tianzifang was originally known as Zhicheng Fang, a Shikumen residential complex built in the 1930s.
It was named after Tian Zifang, an ancient Chinese painter, by artist Huang Yongyu in the early 2000s.
The district remained a typical residential area until the late 20th century when affordable rents attracted artists who established studios there.
In 1998, a wet market on Taikang Road moved indoors, and by 2001, the area was officially designated as an artistic and creative quarter.
In 2005, plans for demolition were halted due to strong opposition from residents, business owners, and artists like Chen Yifei, preserving the district's traditional Shikumen architecture and cultural ambiance.
Since then, Tianzifang has developed into a major tourist attraction and creative hub in Shanghai.
