St. Nicholas Cathedral in Fribourg, Switzerland, is a remarkable Gothic cathedral constructed between 1283 and 1490. It stands prominently on an elevated site overlooking the city. The cathedral serves as the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva, and Fribourg. Its architecture features a 74-meter-high bell tower, accessible by a spiral staircase of 365 steps, offering breathtaking views of Fribourg. The main west portal is adorned with a 14th-century bas-relief depicting the Last Judgement. Inside, the cathedral houses a rich collection of stained-glass windows designed primarily by Polish artist Józef Mehoffer from 1896 to 1936, representing one of Europe's most significant ensembles of Art Nouveau church glass. The ensemble was later complemented by works from French painter Alfred Manessier. The interior also boasts a notable choir screen crafted by Ulrich Wagner in the late 15th century, considered a masterpiece of late Gothic art. The cathedral's organs, built by Aloys Moser in the early 19th century, blend classical and romantic styles and have attracted famous musicians such as Franz Liszt and Anton Bruckner. The cathedral hosts a variety of religious events and concerts, maintaining its active role in the community. Restoration efforts have preserved the historic south portal, which was once protected from pollution by a wooden structure and reopened to visitors in 2016.
