Schadau Castle was built between 1846 and 1854 by banker Abraham Denis Alfred de Rougemont and his wife Sophie de Pourtalès, following plans by architect James Victor Colin and façade designs by Pierre-Charles Dusillon.
The castle replaced an older 17th-century building and incorporated medieval and Renaissance architectural influences.
In 1925, the city of Thun acquired the castle, which later underwent façade renovations from 1972 to 1992.
