1952

Construction of New Market began in 1952 on 35 acres of land during the tenure of Nurul Amin as Chief Minister of East Bengal and was completed in 1954.

It was established to meet the shopping needs of nearby residential areas such as University of Dhaka and Dhanmondi.

From the 1950s to the early 1990s, New Market was the premier shopping and recreational destination in Dhaka.

In the 1980s, the market expanded with the addition of several new blocks including New Super Market and Bonolata, increasing its capacity significantly.
