MuseumsQuartier (MQ) is a vast cultural complex in Vienna's 7th district, spanning 9 hectares and combining historic Baroque buildings with contemporary architecture by Laurids and Manfred Ortner. Opened in 2001 after extensive renovation of the former imperial stables, MQ houses major institutions such as the Leopold Museum, MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna), and Kunsthalle Wien. It serves as a dynamic hub for visual arts, contemporary exhibitions, dance at the Tanzquartier, architecture at the Architekturzentrum Wien, and children’s cultural programs at the ZOOM Kindermuseum. MQ also hosts numerous festivals including the Wiener Festwochen and the Viennale film festival, fostering a lively cultural scene. The complex integrates around 60 alternative art groups within its quartier21, supports an artist-in-residence program, and offers spaces for new media and interdisciplinary artistic production. Its location near the Volkstheater and Museumsquartier U-Bahn stations makes it highly accessible. Despite initial criticism for accessibility shortcomings, the MQ has become one of the largest cultural districts worldwide, celebrated for its unique blend of history and cutting-edge culture.

歴史

1713

The MuseumsQuartier area was originally the imperial stables (Hofstallungen) built starting in 1713, designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed by his son Joseph Emanuel.

Over the centuries, the complex underwent numerous modifications, including additions by Emperor Franz Joseph I.

After World War I and the fall of the monarchy, the stables lost their original function and were converted into the Messepalast exhibition hall in the 1920s.

From the 1980s, plans emerged to transform the area into a cultural complex.

2001

Following an architectural competition won by Ortner & Ortner, the MQ was renovated and opened in 2001, blending Baroque heritage with modern architecture to create one of the largest cultural districts worldwide.
