New Mexico
The Sandia Peak Tramway is a remarkable aerial tramway located near Albuquerque, New Mexico, stretching from the city's northeast edge to Sandia Peak on the Sandia Mountains ridge. It is renowned as the longest aerial tram in the Americas and was the world's longest from its opening in 1966 until 2010. The tramway features two cars, each capable of carrying 50 passengers, traveling a steep ascent of 3,819 feet over 15 minutes. Its engineering includes two support towers, with the longest clear span measuring 7,720 feet, ranking as the third-longest in the world. The tram offers spectacular panoramic views of Albuquerque and over 11,000 square miles of New Mexico countryside. At the summit, visitors can enjoy year-round activities including hiking on Forest Service trails, mountain biking in warmer months, and skiing in winter. The adjacent TEN 3 restaurant provides scenic dining experiences. Safety is paramount with multiple emergency systems in place, and the tramway has safely transported over 12 million passengers since its maiden voyage. The site also holds historical significance near the TWA Flight 260 crash site visible from the tram.

Storia
The Sandia Peak Tramway was constructed by the Sandia Peak Ski Company, founded by balloonist Ben Abruzzo and Robert Nordhaus, inspired by Swiss tramways.
Built by Bell Engineering of Switzerland, construction involved over 5,000 helicopter trips to transport workers and materials, especially for the second tower.
It opened on May 7, 1966, originally holding the record for the longest aerial tramway worldwide.
The tram cars were replaced in 1986 and again in 2016, with track cables updated in 2009.
In 2021, a severe winter storm caused a notable incident where passengers were stranded for over 17 hours but were safely rescued.
