Carhenge is a unique art installation replicating the iconic Stonehenge monument using 39 vintage American cars arranged in a 96-foot diameter circle. Conceived by Jim Reinders in 1982 as a memorial to his father, it was constructed in 1987 with the help of family members and dedicated during the summer solstice. Unlike Stonehenge’s original stone structure, Carhenge uses gray spray-painted automobiles positioned upright and welded to form arches, mimicking the dilapidated state of the ancient site. The installation includes a notable 1962 Cadillac serving as the heelstone and incorporates additional car sculptures painted in various colors across the surrounding Car Art Reserve. The site features a visitor center built in 2006 and a seasonal gift shop. Carhenge has gained cultural significance, appearing in films, music videos, commercials, and documentaries, and attracts thousands of visitors annually who appreciate its blend of Americana, art, and homage to prehistoric architecture.
