Following the construction of Interstate 35 in the 1960s, the U.S.

Highway 61 designation was gradually phased out north of Duluth.

1991

In 1991, the stretch north of Duluth was redesignated Minnesota State Highway 61, marking the official beginning of the scenic byway known today as the North Shore Scenic Drive.
