Storia
The museum was established in 1952 to preserve and interpret Wichita's frontier heritage.
The site is situated along the original Chisholm Trail, a key route for cattle drives from Texas to railheads.
Wichita was founded in 1868 and quickly grew as a cattle town, earning the nickname 'Cowtown.' The neighboring town of Delano was known for its lawlessness, but the east side of the river remained more orderly, partly due to lawmen like Wyatt Earp.
After railroads extended west and south, Wichita lost its role as a cattle drive railhead, and Delano was annexed in 1880.
By 1890, Wichita's population had surged due to a land boom, marking its transition to a more urbanized center.
