Little River Canyon National Preserve, established in 1992, protects a remarkable natural feature atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. Spanning over 15,000 acres, it safeguards the Little River, often called the nation's longest mountaintop river, which carves through one of the deepest canyons in the Southeastern United States. The preserve's sandstone cliffs rise up to 600 feet, providing breathtaking views along the 23-mile scenic drive on the canyon rim. Visitors can witness three major waterfalls: DeSoto Falls, Little River Falls, and Grace's High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Alabama at 133 feet. The preserve offers diverse recreational activities including hiking, wildlife observation, and whitewater kayaking for experienced enthusiasts. While camping within the canyon is currently prohibited, nearby DeSoto State Park offers lodging, campgrounds, and visitor facilities. The preserve combines rich natural beauty with cultural heritage, including remnants of a 1960s amusement park project and Civil War history. Its relatively undisturbed river ecosystem and scenic vistas make it a unique destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Storia

1992

The area now known as Little River Canyon National Preserve was historically called "May's Gulf" and was part of Alabama's DeSoto State Park before being designated a National Preserve by Congress in 1992.

The canyon was formed over millions of years by the Little River cutting through Lookout Mountain, creating one of the Southeast's deepest canyons.

In the 1960s, a private amusement park project including a ski lift was attempted but later abandoned, leaving some remnants visible today.

The preserve has remained largely undeveloped since the New Deal era, though it faces pressures from real estate development in surrounding areas.
