After Dartmouth's museum closed, Chaffee and Walter Paine established the Montshire as a community science center, incorporating it in 1976.
Dartmouth College donated its biological and geological collections to the new museum that year.
Initially housed in a former bowling alley in Hanover, New Hampshire, the museum moved in 1989 to a purpose-built facility in Norwich, Vermont, across the Connecticut River.
