Historia

1913

The Castle in the Clouds estate was constructed in 1913–1914 by Thomas Gustave Plant, a wealthy shoe manufacturer, as a mountain retreat for his second wife, Olive Cornelia Dewey.

Originally named Lucknow, the estate combined several properties including Ossipee Mountain Park and the Crow's Nest observation area.

Designed by J.

Williams Beal and his sons, the mansion featured many architectural innovations uncommon for the era.

1941

After Plant lost his fortune during the 1930s, the house was foreclosed but he remained until his death in 1941.

1956

Subsequent owners preserved the estate, opening it to the public in 1956 as a tourist attraction.

2024

The Castle Preservation Society now manages the property, which was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2024.
