St. Andrew's Church
Kyiv
St. Andrew's Church is a historic Orthodox church located on the steep Andriyivska Hill in Kyiv, Ukraine. Constructed between 1747 and 1754, it was designed by the renowned Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and is a rare example of Elizabethan Baroque architecture in Ukraine. The church is famously linked to Andrew the Apostle, who is believed to have prophesied Kyiv's future as a cradle of Christianity in the Slavic lands at this very site. Over the centuries, several churches stood here, with the current stone structure replacing earlier wooden ones. The church was commissioned by Empress Elizabeth of Russia as part of her summer residence complex and features lavish interior decorations, including a gilded iconostasis crafted by St. Petersburg artists. It has served various roles, from an active place of worship to a museum and cultural landmark, now managed by the Ukrainian government. The church underwent significant renovations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries to address structural challenges and preserve its artistic heritage. Today, it remains a symbol of Kyiv's historical and religious significance and a must-visit architectural masterpiece.
