Kropyvnytskyi Regional Museum of Local Lore
Kirovohradska oblast
The Kropyvnytskyi Regional Museum of Local Lore is the oldest museum institution in the Kirovohrad region of Ukraine. Founded in 1918, it originated as a natural history and local lore museum housed initially in the former Elisavetgrad Women's Gymnasium. The museum officially opened to visitors in 1920 in the building of the former Elisavetgrad Zemstvo Real School, symbolically connected to the first museum in the region established by Vladimir Yastrebov in 1883. Over the years, the museum expanded its collections and departments to include zoology, paleontology, mineralogy, agriculture, archaeology, numismatics, weaponry, and art. Its evolution reflects the administrative changes in the region, from district to interdistrict status, and the broadening of its scope from natural history to encompassing local history and culture. Today, it serves as a treasury of Central Ukraine's history and nature, attracting visitors interested in the region's cultural and scientific heritage.
