Emperor Valley Zoo
Port of Spain
Emperor Valley Zoo, located in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, is the nation's sole public zoological park, spanning 7.2 acres near Queen's Park Savannah. Established in 1952, it began with 127 mainly indigenous animals housed in modest cages. Today, the zoo boasts a diverse collection exceeding 2,300 animals representing over 200 species, including native caimans, ocelots, and the national bird, the scarlet ibis, alongside exotic species like African giraffes, lions, and Asian tigers. The zoo is named after the blue emperor butterfly once abundant in the valley. Recent major upgrades have modernized enclosures to international standards, including a refurbished giraffe habitat and a tiger exhibit featuring white Bengal tigers that successfully bred in 2015. In 2016, the zoo expanded its collection with six llamas from Texas. The facility offers a reptile house, aquarium, primate areas, deer park, and gardens, providing an enriching experience for visitors interested in both local and exotic fauna.
