Historia
Alegría Lagoon formed within the crater of the Tecapa volcano, which last erupted in prehistoric times, spilling lava flows around the area.
The lagoon and surrounding volcano have been significant landmarks since pre-Columbian times, with the Nahuat name Tecapa meaning "Lagoon of stones." The town of Tecapa was renamed Alegría in 1891 in honor of the educator José Miguel Alegría, a prominent Latin professor who founded a philosophy school in the area around 1838.
The lagoon gained national recognition as a protected natural area and cultural symbol, with its nickname "America's Emerald" attributed to Gabriela Mistral's literary homage in 1945.
