The Central Suriname Nature Reserve is a vast conservation area covering 16,000 square kilometers of pristine tropical rainforest in Suriname's Sipaliwini district. Established in 1998 through the merger of three reserves, it protects both montane and lowland primary forests within the Guianan moist forests ecoregion. The reserve is notable for its unique granite domes such as the 245-meter-high Voltzberg, which create rare xerophytic habitats with endemic plant species. It also features Suriname's highest peaks, including the Julianatop at 1,230 meters and the Tafelberg at 1,026 meters. The reserve hosts a rich biodiversity with over 5,000 plant species and diverse fauna including jaguars, giant armadillos, eight primate species, and the colorful Guiana Cock of the Rock bird. A research station at Voltzberg supports ongoing ecological studies. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the reserve is a critical area for conservation and tropical ecology research, attracting ecotourists and scientists alike.
