Sennar Dam
An Nīl al Azraq
The Sennar Dam is an extensive irrigation dam located on the Blue Nile near the town of Sennar in Sudan's Al Jazirah region. It stretches 3,025 meters in length and reaches a height of 40 meters. Designed by Scottish engineer Sir Murdoch MacDonald, its construction began in 1914 but was delayed by World War I and financial challenges. Completed in 1925 by British contractor S Pearson & Sons, the dam created a reservoir with a capacity of roughly 390 million cubic meters. This reservoir supports multiple agricultural projects in the region, including the Blue Nile Agricultural Foundation and the Aljazeera agriculture project, among others. Beyond irrigation, the dam also facilitates hydroelectric power generation, producing approximately 14 MW which supplies over 80% of the electricity demand in Sennar state and helps offset the national grid deficit. The Sennar Dam remains a key infrastructure landmark and a highlight of the state, underpinning the local economy and development.
