The theatrical tradition in Leskovac began in 1896 with the amateur troupe "Građansko Pozorište Jug Bogdan," founded by writer and professor Radoje Domanović.
Professional theater was established in 1926 as "Leskovačko Gradsko Pozorište," followed by the "Akademsko Pozorište" in 1934, which operated until World War II.
After the war, the current National Theater was founded in 1944.
