Al-Qarara Cultural Museum
Khan Yunis
Founded in 2016 near Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip, the Al-Qarara Cultural Museum was a privately licensed institution dedicated to preserving and educating about Palestinian cultural heritage. Established by six founders including Mohamed and Najla Abu Lahia, the museum was housed in a repurposed grain silo. It contained a rich collection of over 3,500 archaeological, historical, and numismatic artifacts from the Gaza region, spanning from 4000 BC to the present day. Highlights included Byzantine mosaics, Crusader period swords, traditional Palestinian thobes, women's jewelry predating the Nakba, and military items from the British Mandate era. The museum played a vital role in strengthening Palestinian identity and cultural awareness. Unfortunately, the museum was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in October 2023 during the Gaza war, with only fragments of pottery and shattered glass remaining. Prior to its destruction, the museum was recognized with the ICCROM Sharjah Award for Reviving Cultural Heritage in 2022.
