The Zacatecas Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, serves as the principal church of the Diocese of Zacatecas, located in the city's historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its construction began after a series of earlier churches dating back to 1568 and 1625, culminating in the current Baroque structure built mainly between 1731 and 1752 under Domingo Ximénez Hernández. The cathedral features a Latin cross floor plan with three naves and is notable for its elaborate pink stone facades, especially the main facade which resembles lace carved in stone, adorned with Corinthian columns, sculptures of apostles, and symbolic religious motifs. The interior contrasts with a sober neoclassical style and houses quarry altarpieces likely designed by architect Manuel Tolsá. The octagonal dome with a lantern and wrought iron cross crowns the building. The cathedral's north and south portals honor the Santo Cristo de la Parroquia and Our Lady of Zacatecas respectively, each richly decorated. Its facade stones change color with sunlight, best viewed in the afternoon. Elevated to cathedral status in 1863 by Pope Pius IX, it remains a cultural and architectural jewel reflecting Zacatecas' silver mining heritage.
