Manantali Dam
Kayes
The Manantali Dam, located on the Bafing River in Mali's Kayes Region, is a significant multipurpose infrastructure project aimed at harnessing the agricultural and hydropower potential of the Senegal River basin. Planned since 1972 by the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS), the dam was constructed between 1982 and 1988, although the hydropower plant was completed later in 2001 after delays caused by regional conflict. It generates approximately 740 GWh annually, supplying electricity primarily to Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania. The dam also supports irrigation and aims to improve river navigation. Despite its benefits, the project faced criticism and financial challenges, including economic inefficiencies due to low electricity tariffs and payment defaults by national utilities. Managed by the Manantali Energy Management Company (SOGEM), the dam remains a key energy source in the region, though power outages persist. Its construction was funded by a consortium of international donors, reflecting its regional importance.

Consejo: Visitors interested in the Manantali Dam should consider visiting during the dry season when access is easier and the reservoir levels are lower for better views. While the dam itself is an industrial facility, arranging a guided tour through local authorities or OMVS can provide valuable insights into its operation and regional impact. Pre-arranged visits are recommended as the dam is not a typical tourist site. There are no public ticketing systems, but inquiries can be made through the OMVS or local tourism offices for permissions and guided access.
Datos interesantes
- •The dam produces about 740 GWh of electricity annually, exceeding initial expectations of 540 GWh.
- •About 55% of the electricity generated is used in Mali, 30% in Senegal, and 15% in Mauritania.
- •The dam was criticized by Germany's minister for development assistance in 1993 as an "act of economic and environmental nonsense."
- •The total cost of the dam and associated infrastructure was approximately 1.02 billion Euro, funded by 16 international donors.
- •Despite generating significant electricity, the dam has not fully resolved power shortages in the beneficiary countries due to low tariffs and payment issues.
Historia
Planning for the Manantali Dam began in 1972 under the OMVS to develop the Senegal River basin.
Construction started in 1982 and the dam was completed in 1988, but the hydropower plant was delayed due to the Mauritania–Senegal Border War in 1989.
The hydropower plant became operational in 2001 after securing additional financing in 1997.
Since then, the dam has been managed by SOGEM and operated initially by EEM, a subsidiary of South Africa's ESKOM, until 2011 when operational contracts changed.
