Historia
Kaunas Botanical Garden was founded in 1923 as part of the Lithuanian University (later Vytautas Magnus University) to serve as a botanical research and education center.
The site was chosen in Aukštoji Freda, incorporating the former J.
Godlevskis manor park and parts of Kaunas fortress defenses.
Under the leadership of Professor Konstantinas Regelis, the garden quickly developed with support from European botanical institutions.
The garden expanded its collections rapidly, reaching over 7,000 species by the mid-1930s.
Despite damage during World War II, the garden recovered and continued to grow, becoming part of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and later reintegrated into Vytautas Magnus University in 1992.
Renovations and expansions, including a major landscape redesign in the 1970s and new experimental greenhouses in the 1980s, have modernized the garden while preserving its historical legacy.
