Gola Rainforest National Park, located in eastern Sierra Leone's Gbarpolu region, is the country's largest tract of rainforest, covering over 71,000 hectares. It forms part of the Upper Guinea Forest, a biodiversity hotspot stretching from Guinea to Togo. The park is home to over 330 bird species, including 14 threatened species, more than 650 butterfly species, and 49 mammal species such as western chimpanzees, pygmy hippopotamuses, and forest elephants. Originally exploited for timber and minerals in the mid-late 20th century, conservation efforts since the 1990s have aimed to protect the forest while involving local communities in sustainable livelihoods. The park was officially established in 2010 by merging three forest reserves and is Sierra Leone's second national park. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025 as part of the Gola-Tiwai complex, highlighting its global ecological importance. The park is also recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International due to its rich avian diversity and conservation value.
