Fort Zeelandia
Essequibo Islands-West Demerara
Fort Zeelandia, located on Fort Island in the Essequibo River delta, is one of the oldest surviving structures in Guyana. Originally built in 1726 as a wooden fortification, it was replaced by the current brick fort constructed between 1740 and 1743 under Dutch colonial rule. The fort was strategically positioned at the mouth of the Essequibo River to protect the interests of the Dutch West India Company and the settlers in the region. Its distinctive lozenge-shaped design, inspired by similar West African forts, features thick walls, two stories, and twenty gunports per floor, housing cannons for defense. The fort served as the administrative center of the Essequibo colony after replacing Fort Kyk-Over-Al in 1739. Despite its initial importance, by the late 18th century, the fort fell into decline following British and French occupations and shifting colonial priorities. Today, Fort Zeelandia is recognized as a National Monument and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, reflecting its cultural and historical significance. Visitors can appreciate its robust colonial architecture and learn about the complex colonial history of Guyana.
